How Will YOU Change Lives This Year?

So, the fact is this: YOU will change lives this year.

But the question is this: HOW will you change them?

Will you be the teacher who comes prepared for your students and ready with a smile everyday? Or will you be the teacher who gets to school right before the students and then takes your anger out at them?

Will you be the teacher who allows students time to share stories with you, even if you feel you have something better to do? Or will you be the teacher who cuts the student off before they get to the good part because it’s just taking too long?

Will you be the teacher who accepts that things don’t always go according to plan, and that it’s okay if the students lead you in different directions? Or will you be the teacher who insists that only your voice matters, and that ‘we’re going to do it because I said so?’

Will you be the teacher who seeks to innovate? Or will you be the teacher who does it the same way you’ve been doing it your whole career?

Will you be the teacher who allows him/herself to show your humanity to your students by laughing and crying with them? Or will you be the teacher who believes your students are not worthy of seeing you as a person?

Will you be the teacher who looks at everything you dislike about education and figure out how you can work with it? Or will you be the teacher who looks at everything you dislike about education and resign yourself – and your students – to defeat?

Will you be the teacher who believes in the abilities of every one of your students, including those who don’t believe in themselves? Or will you be the teacher who looks only at the superficial and refuses to believe in every child’s potential?

Will you be the teacher who, in June, can’t wait for school to start up again in September? Or will you the teacher who, in September, is already wishing for June?

Will you be the teacher who always remembers the reasons you originally pursued a career in education? Or will you be the teacher who forgets them when things get rough?

Will you be the teacher who chooses to make a positive impact on your students and cause incessant joy? Or will you be the teacher who chooses to make a negative impact on your students and cause irreparable harm?

The choice is yours.

  1. I will be the teacher that loves these kids like my own, because they are my kids too. Great post.

  2. Will you be a teacher who scours the web for new and exciting or ideas, or will you just deliver the same old same old?
